One of the biggest trends of the health & fitness industry in the last few years has been the propagation of a vegan or vegetarian diet. There are countless arguments both for and against a plant-based diet and avoiding the consumption of meat and livestock. Aside from the health aspects of this argument there are a number of moral and environmental arguments, also for and against it. And while many seek to simply win the argument, others, like the team at the Avery Dennison Foundation and their president Alicia Procello Maddox have been leading the charge in finding solutions for long-term sustainability.
Avery Dennison and their foundation president Alicia Procello Maddox have always had lofty goals for their plans for the environment and the future of our planet, ending world hunger and remedying the food shortage is clearly one of them. In trying to accomplish such goals Alicia Procello Maddox has been traveling the world with her team and learning and educating others about sustainable farming, livestock rearing and methods to save the environment. One of the biggest issues comes with how livestock animals are raised, reared and treated during the farming practice. In order to solve this issue some of the world’s leaders in farming from Greenpeace along with Alicia Procello Maddox are trying to educate others on a practice known as Natural Animal Raising.
Natural Animal Raising is a process by which livestock animals are raised in a free-range environment. This remedies many of the moral, health, and sustainability concerns surrounding those who are against the consumption and practice of raising livestock that most farmers are currently practicing. In conventional farming and livestock rearing, Alicia Procello Maddox has admonished those farmers as most animals were kept in confined spaces, without the freedom to roam and live as they would like to in the wild. The system of Natural Animal Raising allows for much healthier animals, as they can graze freely. The impact that free-range animals have on the environment is great, some of the most common benefits are:
- They percent erosion of rock formation and lands
- Build the health of soil by fertilizing and enriching the lands
- Improves the growth of plants.
- Sequesters carbon emissions in the soil from the atmosphere
- Improves biodiversity of plant and animal life
- Conserves the habitat of animals native to an area
Now the above benefits are a tremendous leap for the farming and agricultural practices of our world’s farmers. Just these benefits alone, when combined, reach most of the concerns of the masses and allow not only better treatment of animals, but provide us with livestock that is both healthier, happier, and far more nutrient dense for the consumption of humans. In her quest as the president of Avery Dennison’s foundation, Alicia Procello Maddox is doing all that she can to educate farmers on better farming practices including Natural Animal Raising.
